Cow Love

Why do I love cows? Why does anyone love cows?

In fact, come to think of it, why does anyone love anything?

I guess these things are written into the landscape of a life, in the places between where you come from and where you end up.

Sometimes you get to choose those places and sometimes not.

Girl with Cows 1971 Surrey UK

Cow love started quite early for me. I think I’m now trying to channel my younger self, though my jeans are not quite as short. Back then I was clearly smitten, pictured here with a neighbours steers. The one I’ve got my arm around is Billy, and we struck up quite a bond for a few months.

Maybe it was because I was lonely having moved to an unfamiliar home and he showed interest, but I remember the intensity of my affection. He was curious and playful and made me laugh by trying to lick me with his raspy tongue, yet he also seemed sad.

My parents kindly didn’t tell me his eventual fate, saying vaguely when the time had come for his slaughter that he had been ‘moved.’ I don’t remember being hugely upset by his absence but I’d probably made some human friends by then and was busy exploring the countryside after our previously suburban life.

But I always held that thought – one day I would have some cows of my own.

Mission Accomplished wouldn't you say?

  1. I lived a semi feral life on 100 acres as a child with at least 1 paddock containing beef and dairy cattle (no idea why they were mixed). Cows were an integral part of our early lives and it’s funny how years later that cow symbiosis carries on. We walk past cows every day with our dogs on their morning walks and paddocks don’t seem right without cows dotting them and the sound of cows lowing for their morning hay. They have other benefits for the gardener and I am figuring out how to approach some of the local farmers to ask them if I can collect some of the valuable (to me!) by-products of bovine ruminations. I never thought much about where the cows went when I was a child…I loved the meaty results too much! I feel another collective intake of horrified breath and the drumsticks being raised to drum me out of yet ANOTHER vegan confraternity…sigh…oh well… 😉
